Catalina Fleet 21 All Catalina Owners Association, Chicago Region

June 2015 FleetSheet

LET THE OUTINGS BEGIN!
June marks the start of Summer Outings for Fleet 21. What better way to mark the longest day of the year than by sailing to a new harbor and spending the weekend with friends? You’ll find a flyer for our 31st Street Harbor Summer Sailstice in this newsletter. Please note that reservations are a must  — even if you are coming by car.

For those of you new to the Fleet, you should know that it’s perfectly acceptable to drive to an outing. Even if the weather isn’t great, some part of the outing will probably go on. However, without RSVPs the sponsors cannot contact you regarding any change in plans.  In the past few years several outings have been cancelled because no one RSVP’d. Make your plans early and let the sponsors know you plan to attend.

This summer our general meetings will be held in connection with the outings: in June at the Summer Sailstice and in July at Kenosha. July also features the 20th Anniversary of the Lake Michigan Catalina Association Mac Bay Getaway. This annual event
promises to be the best yet! Many members of our Fleet attend every year. Check with your harbor captain if you want to arrange a group sail to Lake Macatawa in Holland, Michigan. As of today the registration form was not available. However, this is an event that requires preregistration so you’ll need to monitor their website www.lmca.com for information.

A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE
Weather hasn’t been the best this spring, however, we ‘lucked out’ with a perfect day for our Margarita Party on Saturday of the
Memorial Day weekend. More than 60 fleet members and friends attended and enjoyed the 1$ Margarita’s. The appetizers were great ranging from fried chicken to cold shrimp and sandwiches. As an added surprise, Kayla Anderson brought a huge cake to celebrate her college graduation. Congratulations to Kayla and thanks to her Mom, Gwen.

An order form for fleece jackets was included in the April Fleet Sheet. The jackets are of excellent quality at a decent price. They jackets are personalized with our fleet logo and your name can be added for a nominal fee. I’ve ordered mine and am hoping it
arrives quickly as I will need it if I plan to sail Team Effort
anytime soon. Our next Outing is the Summer Sailstice on June 19-21 at the 31 st Harbor. Thanks to Dave DeAre for arranging to waive the mooring fee for both nights. More information on the weekend is in this Fleet Sheet.

On the weekend of July 10-12 the Lake Michigan Catalina Association (LMCA), our sister-fleet based at the Macatawa Bay Yacht Club on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, is celebrating their 20th Anniversary. They have planned a great celebration, beginning with a shrimp boil on Friday evening on the yacht club lawn. If you have never attended the Macbay Getaway rendezvous in the past, this is the year to do so. You can check it out on the link on our website www.catfleet21.org or www.lmca.com, their website.

I talked to Bob Standish, Commodore of LMCA, on Friday, May 29, and he said that the sign-up sheet will be available on their website after June 1. He cordially invited all Fleet 21 members to join them for a weekend of fun activities. The yacht club
provides free slips on Friday and Saturday of the weekend, on a ‘first come first serve’ basis for the Rendezvous attendees. We
have been fortunate to attend many of the MacBay Getaways and they are a great time.

Here’s hoping for fair winds and smooth sailing, or just a bit of warmth and sunshine, to all.
Commodore,  Ron Shereyk

RIGGING & EQUIPMENT
By Brian Ruxton
PAY ATTENTION TO THIS. Here’s one of my better recommendations. You may have to move fast on these because they are sold at Costco and once they are gone they may not be available any longer. The product is a set of four solar LED marker lights. The manufacturer is Manor House. A set of four die-cast aluminum markers with rubber bases, not much taller than an inch would be perfect for lighting up a dock. In fact, the box has a picture of a set lining a dock. It will help if you occasionally tumble home after a night of visiting your neighbors.

If you sail at night you can find your slip and dock with ease and confidence. I am using them on my dock and at home on the stairs to our deck. It helps my older dogs see his way in. Before they were on the steps I had them sitting out on the stone wall on our patio. I looked out there one night at about 2am and
thought there was a car in my backyard. That’s how bright they are. Installation is easy. Two screws. I will remove them at the end of the season so they don’t walk off and put them back next year. The cost is $29.99. If you can’t find them at the store you could probably still order at Costco online. Or, look them up in a general GOOGLE search using the manufacturer and product name.

Keep Bill and Margie Heaton and their young grandson in your prayers. Baby Henry just two months old is battling cancer. The Heaton’s were last year’s Rookies of the Year and their boat Four Docks is in Burnham.
