pleasure2January 2014
In Chinese astrology 2014 is the year of the horse.  It’s also the year of the Winter Olympics and the World Cup.  The United Nations has declared it the International Year of Family Farming and also the Year of Crystallography. Will it be the year the Cubs win the pennant or the Bears make it to the Super Bowl?  (There is a “blue moon” January 30, so maybe??).  For Fleet 21 it’s our 41st year and most importantly we hope it is the year of the New Volunteer.  Our same board has served for many years now and we are counting on getting some others involved.  Please contact the Commodore and volunteer to work on a committee (Outings, Programs, Membership to name a few) or be a Harbor Captain.  Harbor Captains invite Catalina Owners to join our Fleet, coordinate sailing to an outing, or publicize events.  It’s a great way to get involved in this organization.  We invite you to do just that!

You can also talk to the Commodore at the upcoming Winter Rendezvous which takes place during Strictly Sail. Spend Saturday, January 25th  at the Strictly Sail boat show at Navy Pier, then head over to the Embassy All Suites Downtown/ Lakefront Hotel, 511 North Columbus Drive– just a few blocks away..  We’ll be set up in the Embassy Atrium Lobby at 8:00 pm with drinks and hors d’oeuvres and enjoy a night of Fleet 21/LMCA camaraderie and a visit with Frank Butler and Sharon Day.  Prize drawings are always a special highlight. Please bring along a great “dinner” hors d’oeuvre and any other snacks you’d like to share as well as your favorite beverage.  Paper plates, napkins, plastic ware and glasses will be provided.  If you prefer, there is also a cash bar in the lobby.

Many of you plan to spend the night at the hotel, but it’s not necessary to be a hotel guest to attend the Rendezvous.  The deadline for making hotel reservations at our special Fleet rate is past, but there may be rooms available.  Call the Embassy Suites at 312-836-5900.  Just be sure to tell them you want the Catalina Fleet 21 rate. ($109)   Embassy Suites has self parking for $39 or valet parking for $55 per day.  Several self-park lots/garages are also in the vicinity and there is very reasonable overnight parking at Navy Pier.

The Strictly Sail boat show features not only new boats and gear, but an impressive group of speakers and seminars.   Highlights this year include a recap of the Americas Cup race with Gary Jobson, presentations by Lin and Larry Pardy and live music with Frankendread.  Don’t miss your chance to learn something new about sailing!  Show hours are 11am–8pm Thursday & Friday, 10am–7pm Saturday, 10am–6pm Sunday.

Again this year Fleet 21 will have a membership booth at Strictly Sail separate from the Catalina Yachts Exhibit.  Look for us at Booth #321. Stop by and help us promote Fleet 21.  You can turn in your membership renewal forms at the booth.  Want to volunteer at the booth?  Contact Dave DeAre: or 630-842-8544.

Happy New Year to all and welcome to our 41st year.  Our 2013 40th anniversary season was brought to a close with our November Dinner Dance celebration at the Burnham Yacht Club.  I am very grateful for the support received during my first year as Commodore.  We are very fortunate to have the Board and membership that makes this such a successful organization.

Congratulations to Nancy Bartlett, our Boat Person of the Year and to Carolyn DeAre, our Commodore’s Award recipient.  Nancy has served in several leadership positions in this organization and continues to accept new responsibilities each year.  Carolyn’s Fleet Sheet is the informational glue which holds this organization together.  My most difficult task (actually my only difficult task) is putting together a few words for this column after much prompting from Carolyn.  Carolyn on the other hand puts together the remaining pages of the Fleet Sheet each and every month. She also continues to accept the responsibility of putting together our annual awards formal dinner each year, a monumental feat in itself.

Our Rookie of the Year award went to Bruno and Sharon Behring for their excellent participation in activities their first year.

I will be calling on some of you to fill any vacant Board positions that may exist in the upcoming season.  You can look forward to having a great year meeting with and serving this great group, not mto mention partaking in our fabulous Board meeting home cooked meals.

Long time Fleet member Alan Malelo passed away on November 21, 2013.  Alan and his wife Jorie joined Fleet 21 in 1995 with their Catalina 34 Namaste moored in Monroe Harbor.  Later they traded up to a Catalina 400, Happenstance, which they kept in DuSable.  Jorie and Alan were active members of the Fleet and their boat was always a happy place to be.  Alan is survived by his wife, two daughters, a son, and seven grandchildren.  He will be missed.
