Fill a bag and head for the Corinthian Yacht Club in Montrose Harbor on April 22 for our annual Dinner & Brown Bag Auction. This popular event is a great way to start the spring sailing season. What goes in that bag? That’s up to you. The item can be nautical or not. You can re-gift a present you can’t use; recycle a boating accessory you no longer need, or just fill it with something neat or tasty. Past surprises have included nautical glasses, art, lighthouses, safety gear, books—you name it! Staple or tape your bag shut (it can also be a box) and indicate on the outside an estimated value and a clue as to what’s inside. (Don’t tell us what it actually is!) Then the bidding begins. It can get fierce even though no one knows what they are bidding on—so bring lots of cash. This year the auction funds will benefit our Mariner’s Service Fund.

The evening begins with Fleet-supplied appetizers at 5:30 pm followed by a buffet dinner catered by Drew’s on Halsted Restaurant starting at 6:30pm. The buffet will include the following: carved roast beef, mashed potatoes with garlic, chicken and vegetable pasta, mixed green salad and grilled vegetables. The price will be between $17 and $20 per person. Also please bring either an appetizer or dessert to share. RSVP by April 15 to Sheila Caldwell: 312-218-6666 or Parking is free and has never been a problem. If you have not renewed your membership, you can bring your renewal form and check. Membership Chair Pat Shereyk will be collecting those.

I would like to thank all of our fleet members who were able to join us for this year’s first program. It started out at Zaytune Mediterranean Grill for a bite to eat. From there we headed over to the Chicago Maritime Museum for the Chicago’s Viking Ship Presentation. Besides being an informative evening, there was plenty of time to meet and socialize with others in the boating community.

Members, our next Regular Meeting will be 5:30 p.m., April 22nd at Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club. We have planned a buffet style dinner catered by Drew’s on Halsted Restaurant starting at 6:30 p.m. The buffet will include the following: Carved Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes w/garlic, Chicken and Vegetable Pasta, Mixed Green Salad and Grilled Vegetables. The price range will be the usual price range of between $17 and $20. As in the past, members may bring appetizers and desserts to be shared. The Regular Meeting will begin immediately following dinner.

Our Brown Bag Auction will conclude the night. The Brown Bag Auction has always been a fun filled evening. This night will benefit our Mariner’s Service Fund. The Mariner’s Service funds enables our fleet to continue contributing monetary funds to programs that promote sailing and boating. Our caterer, Drew Johnson, will make a donation of a dining gift certificate from his restaurant, Drew’s on Halsted, to be included in the auction. Let’s make this a record evening! Come out and bring those nautical items or other items suitable for this fundraising event. Please bag or box the items and include a hint regarding the item and the item’s value . Thank you and I’ll see you there.

For those of you that haven’t renewed your 2017 Catalina Fleet membership, renew using the renewal form in this month’s Fleet Sheet by April 15 or at the Brown Bag Auction. This will ensure your inclusion in the 2017 Catalina Fleet 21 Members Directory.

Commodore, James Caldwell

Every summer the outings chair puts together a schedule of events for the Fleet. The hope is that our members will either sail or drive to the designated harbor for a fun get together. Already on the calendar is the Margarita Party on May 27 followed by an overnight at 31st Street on June 24. What about the rest of the summer? It would be great if we could have an event in every Fleet member’s harbor. Could you sponsor one? It’s not that hard. Pick a date. You arrange for dock space with your Harbor Master, plan for food (will it be a potluck? is there a nearby restaurant where we could go? can pizza be delivered?), and send your details to the Fleet Sheet. Dates will be coordinated by the Outings Chairman. Don’t wait for him to call you. Call Dave DeAre 630-842-8545 or email with your ideas today. The Outings Schedule needs to be finalized by May 1st so it can be published in the May Fleet Sheet.

Fleet 21’s Annual Awards Banquet has been scheduled for Saturday, November 11, 2017. It’s not too early to put this date on your calendar so that you don’t miss this wonderful end of the year event. As always, this will be an evening of great food, drink, dancing and camaraderie. We have a beautiful banquet room and private bar lounge reserved for the evening at Palos Country Club in Orland Park. Watch for further details in upcoming issues of FleetSheet.
Your Awards Banquet Committee,
Madalyn Duerr & Mickie Thompson

Many retired Fleet 21 members have made their way to Florida for all or part of the winter. Punta Gorda seems to be one of the favored nesting spots for snowbirds. This past winter the following Fleet members have been spotted: James and Sheila Caldwell, Cheryl and Bob Kuba, Ed Kita and Kathy Cusimano, Branson and Danita Stone, Lin and Marshall Fernholz, John and Lori Lauraitis, Pat Reynolds, John Luther, Ray and Sylvia Kalinsky, Jack and Lois Bretall, Dave and Robin Green and former members Marilyn and John Lucy. Former Burnham sailors Tom and Judy McInerny are also included in our group. (Hey, they have a sailboat!)

Some were here for the “season” and others just passing through. Whatever the case, it’s always fun to get together with fellow sailors! Everyone is always up for trying out a new lunch or dinner spot, some have done a lot of biking, attended a spring training baseball game, headed to the beach for shark tooth hunting, shopped at flea markets, second hand shops, and art fairs, joined the Elks for their prime rib and chicken nights, gone sailing and power boating, tried their hand at remote controlled sailboat racing, listened to a banjo concert at Snook Haven and generally enjoyed the sunshine! If you’re looking for a retirement spot, check it out!

We jokingly refer to ourselves as Fleet 21 South. If you’d like to share a retirement story, email it to the Fleet Sheet editor.
