Racing 101 May 16
Our General Meeting on Tuesday, May 16, marks the beginning of the 2000 summer season. We shift from Friday night meetings to Tuesday nights so everyone can enjoy their boats on the weekend. This first Tuesday night meeting offers you the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of sailboat racing. Maybe you're thinking of trying Wednesday night club racing, wonder what opportunities for racing are available in our club and the Chicago area, or just would like to understand or improve your knowledge of racing rules and procedures. Nick Schneider from MORF (you'll know what that is if you attend this meeting) will present an introduction to sailboat racing and beginning race rules at our meeting on May 16 which begins at 7:30 p.m. Get a leg up on the competition for our 2nd Annual Memorial Melee Regatta which. is part of the Memorial Day Outing (details inside). Get ready for the 30 Nationals to be held at the LMCA Catalina Rendezvous in July at Holland, Michigan. Fleet 21 (that's us) is sponsoring this race. Get reacquainted with your fellow Catalina owners. Get your new 2000 Fleet 21 Directory. Attend our General Meeting on May 16.

The meeting will be held at the Burnham Park Yacht Club located at 1500 S. Linn White Drive Follow the signs to Meigs Field. Come early and enjoy dinner at the club beginning at 6:30 p.m. If you plan to have dinner, please call the Yacht Club at 312-427-4664 for reservations. Be certain to tell them you are a part of the Catalina group. The business meeting will begin promptly at 8:00p.m.

Message from the Commodore
It's hard to talk about how great the sailing is when my boat is still on dry dock. To those who are in the water already, I am envious of you. To everyone else still painting and sanding, continue working safely so you can enjoy the sailing season when you do get in. Hopefully, everyone will be in and ready to attend our Memorial Day outing at Burnham. If you can't sail in, be sure to drive in. I'm looking forward to meeting some or all of our new members at this outing.

At the last board meeting, we changed the July General Meeting from Tuesday. July 18 to Tuesday, July 25. Please mark your calendar. We hope this will insure a larger turnout for our meeting and guest speaker that month.

The directory is on schedule and will be available at the May General Meeting. A copy will be mailed to those not at the meeting. Our thanks to all who took the time to update your info for our database. The directory reflects the information you furnished us on your application or renewal. Please keep our Membership Chairpersons aware of any changes you make during the year.

To all new members: who is going to be the first two boats to call me and tell me what is different about this month's newsletter? The lucky winners will receive free ice cream at the Hammond Outing.

As our Outings begin, I'd like to remind new and experienced boaters alike of our Buddy Boat system. If you are a new boater, or heading to a new destination for a Fleet outing, or just want company, you can call your Harbor Captain and ask for a Buddy Boat who will sail within sight of you to an outing. You experienced old hands, please help out when your Harbor Captain asks you to be a Buddy Boat. We don't want anyone to miss an event because they didn't know where to go or didn't want to go alone!

HARBOR NEWS
Mast stepping is available at Burnham Park Yacht club They have installed a
new crane at the end of the finger dock in front of the yacht club. Boats up to 7' draft can be accommodated. Make reservations by calling the yacht club at 312-427-4664.

Monroe Harbor Captain warns that given the low water level and the fact that the chain
length between the can and the bottom has not been changed there is a risk of gel coat
damage to the stern on your boat when the can downwind of your can is empty. The
windage on your boat will put stern in contact with the downwind can which does not
have a strain on it to pull it out of the way. Result, small gel coat nicks.

Hammond's new yacht club and bathroom facilities are open.

Michigan City has been dredged and is open.

XM QUJCKFIT VEST
RE-ARM KIT ORDER FORM

The Re-arm Kit for the XM Quickfit Vest (PFD) consists of the gas cylinder, lever retaining tag and bobbin. The bobbin is the lower portion of the assembly (opposite the C02 cartridge). It is recommended that the bobbins be replace annually and that the PFD's be manually inflated to make sure that there are no defects which would cause the vest not to inflate (i.e., tiny holes in the vest). We will be ordering Re-Arm Kits as a courtesy for Fleet 21 members who purchased this vest in 1998. We will need to order at least 40 kits to take advantage of the bulk rate of $15.00 per kit to members, which includes shipping. If purchased individually, the price is $16.95 plus $6.80 shipping.

Please complete the following information if you wish to place an order and forward your check payable to Catalina Fleet 21 -Chicago Region to Phil Byrd at 6510 Pine Trail, Tinley Park, IL 60477.

Rigging & Equipment

Souped-up Sandpaper
A neat idea for extending the usefulness of ordinary sandpaper: tape duct tape to the back of each sheet of sandpaper. This gives the sandpaper added strength and allows it to be cut into strips of various widths to accommodate any sanding requirement. The tape also makes the sandpaper more flexible. You can hold each end of a strip and pull the paper back and forth with greater force than before.

Simple Chafing Gear
The worst source of vibration on a Catalina 30 is the three cylinder diesel engine. Some owners have tried a variety of different material to thwart chafe on fuel lines, water hoses, and electrical wiring as well as throttle and decompression cables. What's their best solution yet: black foam-rubber bicycle handlebar grips. The diameter of this rubber material is expandable. It fits lines ranging from " to " in diameter and compresses them snugly. It's easy to cut with common scissors and easy to join with glue, tape, or Velcro.

The order form for the XM Quickfit Vest Re-Arm kit is included in this newsletter.

RACING
One of the biggest events of the year for Fleet 21 is the 1C30A National Championship race in Holland. MI, which we are sponsoring. Nick Thies is the chairman of this event and has sent out the first mailing to Catalina 30' owners. And while only 30's can race this event. Nick needs help from all size boat owners. Please contact Nick if you can help in any way (both before and during the regatta). He'll need help with registration, coordination, with LMCA, organizing crew, and more. Join in and help make this event happen. Our Fleet reputation is on the line. Sign up at the May General Meeting or give Nick a call at 708-403-9216 or email Windchill1903@yahoo.com.

When traveling to and from Fleet outings, monitor radio channel 72 for updates, directions, or to hail other fleet members.
