  STRICTLY SAIL THEN STRICTLY FUN
Get a taste of summer at the Strictly Sail Boat Show at Navy Pier January 26 through 29. Climb aboard a new boat, take in some intriguing sailing seminars, and ogle all the new stuff that would sure be handy on your boat. For a look at everything going on at the show this year check out their website at www.strictlysailchicago.com. Avoid the crowds and take in the show on Thursday or Friday, but plan to spend Saturday night at the Fleet 21 Winter Rendezvous. Again this year, the Rendezvous will be at the Embassy Atrium Lobby in the Embassy All Suites Downtown/Lakefront Hotel, 511 North Columbus Drive. Please bring an hors d’oeuvre and snacks to share as well as your favorite beverage. As part of the evening, we’ll also have our January General Meeting. A flyer with complete details is included in this newsletter.

Many of you plan to spend the night at the hotel, but it’s not necessary to be a hotel guest to attend the Rendezvous. The deadline for making hotel reservations at our special Fleet rate is past, but it’s possible something can still be arranged. There is a link on our Fleet website for reservations (www.catfleet21.org) or call Mickie Thompson at 630-257-8052.

This year Fleet 21 is sponsoring a booth at Strictly Sail separate from the Catalina Yachts Exhibit. We’ll be with the club booths, booth #321, across from Quantum Sails. We hope this new location will provide greater visibility and the opportunity to talk to fellow Catalina owners who are interested in joining our Fleet. Members of a special membership committee will work at the booth during the show. Stop by our booth and help us promote Fleet 21! You can turn in your Fleet 21 membership renewal at the booth too.

Our traditional dinner and brown bag auction takes place in February. We have the location—Corinthian Yacht Club at Montrose Harbor—we are still trying to confirm the date. Check the website for updates and the February Fleet Sheet.

A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE

Hello and I wish all members a happy and healthy New Year!!!!

Take a look at the adjoining mast head. As you can see, many of us are returning to our positions from last year, but there are a lot of vacant spaces! We need volunteers to fill these positions. Just call me and I am happy to welcome you aboard.

Although the four elected officials are identified as the Executive Board, all others are considered Directors and complete our Board, actively participating in Board meetings and determining what happens in Catalina Fleet 21.

Our Harbor Captains are important to keep us informed of what is happening in their Harbors, arranging to “buddy boat” on outings, meeting new Catalina boat owners and introducing them to our Fleet as well as attending Board meetings. Our chairpersons are responsible for securing their own committees and providing the Board with their plans.

Chairpersons are needed for the Program and Race Committees. The program chairman ,with help and ideas from other board members, plans six programs that are presented at the General Meetings in March, April, June, August, September and October. The General Meeting programs are geared to information for all sailors and can include upcoming area events, travel and charter opportunities, personal experiences, as well as new products on the market. or even entertainment. We often chose from ones we learn of at the Strictly Sail Boat Shows as well as the Chicago Maritime Festival. The Race Committee Chairman has in recent years coordinated our Fleet participation in the Leukemia Club. More racing could be planned if the Chairman so desired.

Our Fleet cannot continue without your participation. Please volunteer! If you would like to be a co-chairman of an area, that’s okay too. Just let me know where you would like to serve.

I’m excited regarding our new action at the Strictly Sail show of our very own Catalina Fleet 21 Booth. We are trying this new approach to inform Chicago Sailors of our existence and increase our membership. This is also a good time for members to sign up for the openings on our Board as well as dropping off your membership renewals.

See you at the show!
Sincerely,
Nancy Bartlett, Commodore

MEMBERSHIP
Your 2012 membership renewal form is included in this newsletter. Please fill it out completely even if your information has not changed. Bring your completed form to the Fleet 21 Membership Booth at Strictly Sail or mail it to Pat and Ron Shereyk.
Please consider including a donation to the Fleet Mariner’s Fund when you renew your membership. This fund was established by the Fleet in 2000 as a means to give back to the sailing community. You don’t have to have a special occasion to contribute, but donations can be made in honor of a special birthday, anniversary, or as a memorial contribution.

Each year the chairman of the Mariner’s Fund evaluates possible recipients and recommends distribution of the funds. Past recipients include the Sea Scouts, Salvation Army, and the Uhlich Children’s Home. This past year a $300 donation went to the Friends of the Viking Ship based on a very interesting Fleet program regarding a 1893 Viking Ship Restoration in Geneva, Illinois. This year we are considering donating to a collegiate racing team with Fleet ties, but we also welcome ideas from you.
