LET’S RENDEZVOUS!
The dictionary defines “rendezvous” as a meeting planned at a certain time and place. We’ve got one planned for 8:00 p.m., Saturday, January 29th, at the Embassy Atrium Lobby in the Embassy All Suites Downtown/Lakefront Hotel, 511 North Columbus Drive. We think it will be the perfect setting to enjoy Fleet 21/LMCA camaraderie and a visit with Frank Butler and Sharon Day. This year we are going back to the “good old days” when we supplied our own lavish hors d’oeuvre dinner and beverages. The Embassy has a huge atrium lobby and we will be taking over about ˝ of it for our rendezvous. Because this is public space, there is no problem with having our own “potluck” event. So bring along a great “dinner” hors d’oeuvre and any other snacks that you’d like as well as your favorite beverage.

Paper plates/napkins/plastic ware and glasses will be provided. For those who prefer, there is also a cash bar in the lobby that will be available that evening. As part of the evening, we’ll also have our January General Meeting.

Many of you plan to spend the night at the hotel, but it’s not necessary to be a hotel guest to attend the rendezvous. The deadline for making hotel reservations at our special Fleet rate is past, but it’s possible something can still be arranged. Call Mickie Thompson if you need a room reservation: 630-257-8052.

The Rendezvous always happens during the Strictly Sail Show which runs Thursday, January 27 – Sunday, January 30. Hours: 11am–8pm Thursday & Friday, *New Weekend Hours* 9am–7pm Saturday, 10am–5pm Sunday. For a complete list of seminars scheduled, parking information, and vendors go to http://www.strictlysailchicago.com.

Fleet 21 will again be manning a Catalina Owner’s booth at the show. Volunteers are needed to be at the booth during all hours of the show. Your admission to the show is paid for when you spend some time working at the booth for Fleet 21. There are a few time slots remaining. Contact Dave DeAre at deare30@sbcglobal.net or at 630-842-8544 to volunteer.

Our traditional January Potluck and brown bag auction has been moved to February 19th. That event will be at Corinthian Yacht Club located at Montrose Harbor. More details in the February newsletter.

A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE
Welcome to the beginning of Catalina Fleet 21’s 38th year!

Thank you Bill Thompson for your leadership and enthusiasm these past 2 years.

Our new officers, Ray Kalinsky as treasurer, Mike Walsh as secretary, Pat Reynolds as Vice Commodore and yours truly as Commodore are looking forward to a good year of programs and outings. We’re starting off with the combination General Meeting and outing at our Winter Rendezvous, January 29th, following the Strictly Sail Boat show. Our annual Brown Bag Auction will be held February 19th at the Corinthian Yacht Club. Later Fleet Sheet will have the details. Don Giuliano, our Program Chairman, is busily pursuing subjects for future monthly meeting. Mickie Thompson is Outing chairman and will be presenting her plans at our February Board Meeting.

With your membership renewal form included herein, you will find a survey questionnaire asking you, our members, to offer your thoughts and ideas for what you would like to see provided by our organization. Receiving this information will allow us to maintain the degree of interest and enthusiasm our club has always experienced. Also I will be contacting those of you who have been serving as Harbor Captains to ascertain your desire to continue in this regard.

Looking forward to seeing all of you at Strictly Sail and our Winter Rendezvous.

Nancy E. Bartlett, Commodore

RIGGING & EQUIPMENT

Happy New Year all. It’s me again, Brian Ruxton, your new rigging and equipment person. I thought this meant that I would have a huge budget that would allow me to buy new things for my boat and report back on them to the Club. Since that’s not the case what I plan on doing this year is keeping my eyes and ears open for interesting things I read about, see at boat shows or hear about from other sailors. I also will try to answer any questions that anyone may have so feel free to send me an e-mail if there is something you want me to look into. My e-mail address is bdr18@sbcglobal.net. If anyone has anything of interest that they want to submit, please feel free to do that as well. I will absolutely give credit where it is due. That’s a really good segue way into this month’s column. Walter Hartmann submitted this article.

Wally’s Tips

*When replacing your water pump impeller it is a good idea to coat it with Glycerol Oil or use Vaseline. It will make it last longer.

*Do you paint your bottom?  If so, use a long handle on your roller. A 3 or 4 feet long one. This will make it much easier on your back and the painting will go much faster.

*Scotch Tough Duct Tape 3M.   It leaves no residue!  You can leave it on for six months
outdoors and it will not leave no residue. You can find it West Marine or True Value Hardware ( it’s cheaper there).

Don’t miss the fun next year…mark your calendar now! The Fleet Banquet is November 19, 2011
