March General Meeting
at
Crowley’s Yachtapalooza
March 26

IT’S IN THE BAG!

The highlight of our winter “potluck” meeting is always the Brown Bag auction. I’ve seen some amazing things come out of those nondescript bags : lamps, lines, lots of laughs, candles, candy, and other crazy stuff! It’s all great fun and a great fundraiser for the fleet. So as you make your plans for the potluck on Saturday, February 19, look around for a brown bag item. It can be nautical or not. It’s a perfect way to re-gift that gadget that you can’t use! Place the item in a bag, staple it shut, and indicate an estimated value on the outside of the bag as well as a clue to the contents. Our fast-talking auctioneers will get you to part with a surprising amount of cash for someone else’s brown bag, so be sure to bring some of that too.

This event takes place on Saturday, February 19 at the Corinthian Yacht Club located at Montrose Harbor. Parking along the street in front of the Yacht Club is free. And while we continue to call this a potluck, it’s really a catered dinner. The Yacht Club makes us use their caterer. The price for the dinner is approximately $12.50. (We are still working with the caterer on this). We’ll start off with cocktails and snacks at 6:00pm. The yacht club has a bar and very reasonable prices. We’ll have dinner at 7pm followed by a very brief business meeting and then it’s on to the brown bag auction.

In addition to your auction item, please bring a log for the fire and your membership renewal form. Another copy of the form is included in this newsletter. And don’t forget to fill out the survey on the back of the form. It’s crucial that we tell the caterer how many we’ll have for dinner. Please RSVP to Nancy Bartlett at 815-730-9334 by February 17.

Again this year our March General Meeting will be held in conjunction with Yachtapalooza at Crowley’s Yacht Yard. We’ll have more on this event in the next newsletter, but generally they have seminars from 10 am – 4pm. Our meeting is usually around 1pm followed by a group lunch.

In April the General Meeting will be April 15 at the Burnham Park Yacht Club. In May the General Meeting is held at the Margarita Party on Memorial Day Weekend. More details later.

A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE
Welcome to the beginning of Catalina Fleet 21’s 38th year!

Thank you Bill Thompson for your leadership and enthusiasm these past 2 years.

Our new officers, Ray Kalinsky as treasurer, Mike Walsh as secretary, Pat Reynolds as Vice Commodore and yours truly as Commodore are looking forward to a good year of programs and outings. We’re starting off with the combination General Meeting and outing at our Winter Rendezvous, January 29th, following the Strictly Sail Boat show. Our annual Brown Bag Auction will be held February 19th at the Corinthian Yacht Club. Later Fleet Sheet will have the details. Don Giuliano, our Program Chairman, is busily pursuing subjects for future monthly meeting. Mickie Thompson is Outing chairman and will be presenting her plans at our February Board Meeting.

With your membership renewal form included herein, you will find a survey questionnaire asking you, our members, to offer your thoughts and ideas for what you would like to see provided by our organization. Receiving this information will allow us to maintain the degree of interest and enthusiasm our club has always experienced. Also I will be contacting those of you who have been serving as Harbor Captains to ascertain your desire to continue in this regard.

Looking forward to seeing all of you at Strictly Sail and our Winter Rendezvous.

Nancy E. Bartlett, Commodore

RIGGING & EQUIPMENT
Happy New Year all. It’s me again, Brian Ruxton, your new rigging and equipment person. I thought this meant that I would have a huge budget that would allow me to buy new things for my boat and report back on them to the Club. Since that’s not the case what I plan on doing this year is keeping my eyes and ears open for interesting things I read about, see at boat shows or hear about from other sailors. I also will try to answer any questions that anyone may have so feel free to send me an e-mail if there is something you want me to look into. My e-mail address is bdr18@sbcglobal.net. If anyone has anything of interest that they want to submit, please feel free to do that as well. I will absolutely give credit where it is due. That’s a really good segue way into this month’s column. Walter Hartmann submitted this article.

Wally’s Tips

*When replacing your water pump impeller it is a good idea to coat it with Glycerol Oil or use Vaseline. It will make it last longer.

*Do you paint your bottom?  If so, use a long handle on your roller. A 3 or 4 feet long one. This will make it much easier on your back and the painting will go much faster.

*Scotch Tough Duct Tape 3M.   It leaves no residue!  You can leave it on for six months
outdoors and it will not leave no residue. You can find it West Marine or True Value Hardware ( it’s cheaper there).
