Catalina Fleet 21 - Chicago
November 17 is the finale of this year's Fleet season. Our Annual Awards Banquet is truly a special evening: great food, dancing to the music of a live band, prizes, awards, and everyone looking spectacular. New members, you really do not want to miss this event. Even the location is a treat: the beautiful Belmont Station of the Chicago Yacht Club. Invitations were mailed weeks ago and reservations are overdue, but it's not too late! Give Cheryl Kuba a call at 773-327-9331. She can almost always add last minute reservations. The party begins at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails (cash bar); dinner is set for 7:30 p.m.
Again this year we ask that you bring a donation for a local food pantry:
canned food, new mittens, caps, gloves or socks are needed. We are also
in need of a few more table prizes with an estimated value of $30.
Call Cheryl if you can bring one. Hope we see every Fleet member there!
There is no General Meeting or Fleet Sheet in December, but mark your
calendars (if you've got em)
for our January Potluck on the 19th. This traditional start to our Fleet year is at the Corinthian Yacht Club.
Keep the brown bag auction in mind as you unwrap those Christmas presents! Look for details on this event after the first of the year.
The Strictly Sail Show returns to Navy Pier January 31 - February 3,
2002. The Fleet is taking a year off from hosting the Strictly Catalina
Reception, but Catalina Yachts is planning a special event in its place.
flyer in this newsletter gives details as well as information on special hotel rates for the Fleet. Plan to make a weekend of it!
All of these winter events offer you the chance to keep in touch with your Fleet friends, savor summer memories, and plan ahead for the next season of fair winds, blue skies, and flat seas.
A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE
As my year as Catalina Fleet 21-Chicago Region Commodore comes to an end. I would like to thank all those members who volunteered their time and talents to make 2001 another successful year. I would especially like to thank the Fleet Officers: Lori Lauraitis, Vice Commodore; Deborah Ruxton, Secretary; and Branson Stone, Treasurer. Thanks as well to all the committee chairs for all their hard work. Their tireless efforts and good humor have enabled us to continue the programs and events which give so much pleasure to all of us. I know that the spirit of volunteerism, which I have experienced during this year, will continue.
Our annual Awards banquet is Saturday, November 17th at Chicago Yacht Club - Belmont Station. Bob and Cheryl Kuba have planned a great evening of good food and entertainment. At that time I will introduce the officers for 2002. It's not too late to make reservations for this gala event. Since this is our last event of the year, I hope to see many of you there.
The January 2002 Potluck Supper and Brown Bag Auction will be held on Saturday, January 19th at Corinthian Yacht Club, Montrose Harbor. It's a great way to start the new year. Look for details in the January Fleet Sheet.
Again, thanks for a great year.
Sadly, we were just advised that Bob Crowe, one of our longtime Catalina Fleet 21 members, passed away during the sailing season. Lori Lauraitis spoke to Bob's wife, Maureen, who said Bob had been fighting diabetes for a number of years, along with various other health problems. He was in Madison, Wisconsin, recuperating after surgery and developed lung complications causing his death on July 12, 2001.
Maureen and Bob were instrumental in handling one of our first North Point outings a few years ago. They did a great job with reserving the party area and serving pieces of cake to most of us from Chicago. A memorable outing and a good time were had by all who attended.
Maureen has now sold their boat, Cloud Nine, to a young couple who she will try and bring to a meeting next year and introduce them to our Fleet as potential members. She kept her dinghy, enabling her to visit with her friends in the harbor next season.
Expressions of sympathy and condolences may be sent to Maureen and her family

RIGGING AND EQUIPMENT
Dr. Nautical here.
The time has come to write my last Rigging & Equipment article. By the time you read this, your boat will be on the hard, your sails folded and in sail bags, the head and engine winterize.
It's been a pleasure being your Rigging & Equipment guy, oops, I mean Dr. Nautical.
Till the warm breezes blow,
I don't make boat calls anymore.
P.S. Stay in touch with your nauticals.

The Fleet took a night off from winterizing boats, donned costumes, and traveled to far off Indiana for the last General Meeting of the year. Like most Fleet get-togethers, there was the normal shortage of food and drink, but some how the nineteen boats ( Allegro, Bearoness, Bleed'n Green, Boogaloo, C'scape, Finesse, Halcyon, Maris, Northern Crown, Railin, Sea Horse, Stan By, Summer Mink, Team Effort, Ultimate 19th Hole, Ultimate Therapy, Weak Moment, Wind Dancer, and Wind Lord) representing the Fleet managed to get through the evening. After a very brief meeting, we entertained ourselves by abusing James Thurber's wonderful story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and testing our knowledge of each other's occupations. The evening ended on the back patio, watching the fire pit slowly burn down. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as we did. We look forward to the Banquet and, of course, to next summer.
